Johnny Lee Profile
Toronto born, Victoria based Metis artist, Johnny Lee draws from his ancestral roots. Johnny’s heritage is of French and Native descent on his mother’s side and European descent on his father’s side. After coming to a crossroads in 2002, Johnny spoke with a Native Elder whose words were:“ The longest walk you’ll ever make is from your head to your heart. Stop listening to your head and start listening to your heart”
Johnny has been professionally illustrating in graphite pencil ever since.
He received a diploma in Arts and Sciences and Liberal Studies from George Brown College in Toronto. He has worked extensively with children in the recreational sector over the years encouraging their artistic expression through various mediums. His artistic credits include works for The Metis Community Association, The Vancouver Island Aboriginal Transition Team, Copper Moon: communications for aboriginal initiatives, a spotlight television feature on “The New Canoe”, work presented at The Mercy Ship’s gala, The Belfry Theatre and The First Peoples annual fundraiser gala. Last year, Johnny’s “Shoshoni Warrior” image was featured on the Exclusive Evening Invitation to The Calgary Stampede preview. His work has also appeared at The McPherson Playhouse, Lonewolf Gallery, She Designs, The Lighthouse Gallery, The Spiral Cafe, The Rising Star Bistro, Poundmakers, Paradisio Di Stelle, The Meridian Centre, Wahsa Gallery, Gust Gallery and The Trading Post Gallery.
On her recent tour, Johnny presented Buffy Sainte- Marie with his first artist’s proof of “ Gathering of Nations” when she performed here in Victoria. He is currently represented by 5 galleries across western Canada and exhibits shows annually as well as undertakes selective commissions.
