Ronald Chironna Profile
My Images
I was born August 25, 1954 in Staten Island, New York. As I grew up, I enjoyed copying images from my favorite storybooks and the comic books that I collected. I don't think that at a young age my artwork looked any different than the artwork that all my friends created. Drawing just became a hobby for me.The thought that I could make a career out of this hobby didn't occur to me until I was a senior at Susan Wagner High School in Staten Island. The teachers of the few art classes I was taking at the time told me that I had enough artistic talent to get a scholarship to a good art college. That was probably the moment in my life that made all the difference. During the second semester of that final year in high school I took advantage of all the art classes that my exceptional school had to offer. Those classes included drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and graphic design.
I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute, a well-respected art and engineering college in Brooklyn, New York. There I majored in Communications Design and Illustration, learning the business from some of the top professionals in the field. While a senior at Pratt, I began a slow but steady inroad into the illustration profession. I took the traditional route of "pounding the pavements" of New York City during my free time, and my school portfolio earned me the first jobs of my career.
I would say that my biggest influences were the teachers I had both in high school and college. They helped me find the direction I was looking for in the world of art and illustration, and they taught me what I needed to know about art history, art techniques, and the business of working as a commercial artist. I think my artwork also reflects some of the influences of the artists whose work I admire. I think my style is an amalgam of all those influences.
Over the past twenty-seven years I've worked as a freelance illustrator for clients from just about all fields of publishing and the media: television, magazines, textbooks, advertising, trade books, mass market books, professional journals, professional and medical organizations, and now, electronic books. I've also been lucky enough to land jobs for companies that produce my favorite brand of literature: fantasy and science fiction. I've created artwork for various science fiction/fantasy magazines, and illustrated cards for numerous collectible card games like Magic: the Gathering.
All of my recent color artwork has been done using colored pencils. I do my black and white work in either pencil or pen and ink. And using those techniques, I've been able to garner a few awards over the years. I've won recognition for my work at several science fiction conventions, and various publishing and design organizations have also seen fit to honor me for my work.
