HELIOS - Aspects of the Sun

The Helios Series

When you think of the Sun - what comes to mind?

Do you think of it as an astronomical object - a huge ball of fire, constant nuclear explosion, fusing hydrogen into helium; solar flares, sunspots, eclipses, corona?

Do you think of it as a catalyst for religion and religious rituals - sungods, obelisks, morning prayer?

Do you think of the development of the heliocentric world view, of Kepler, of enlightenment, the modern world view?

Do you think of it as the driving force of weather and people's moods, the daily forecast, sunglasses, suntan lotion, the subject of polite conversation?

The canvases of my Helios series explore the many aspects of the Sun; fusing science and art, observation and ritual, representation and abstraction.

The Helios Series takes you on a voyage to the Sun. See the Sun?s granulated surface, sun-spots, the photosphere, eclipses, solar flares,... but not in the way you expect. These are not astronomical illustrations, but interpretations of the subject matter. Drawing a parallel between the Sun and fire, I actually burned the canvas, leaving delicate scorch-marks on the paint and the raw linen. For my Eclipse paintings, I cut holes into the canvas and suspended the moon in the void with strings, re-creating delicate sun-rays. Casts of fossils and seashells are part of some paintings, pointing to the Sun as the origin of all life on Earth. And re-appearing again and again are traces of texts, written directly onto the canvas: astronomical data, personal musings, a poem by Goethe,...

Painting for me is about taking risks. I like to experiment with my materials and my process of making art. My aim is to push each new painting to its limits and not to repeat myself.

On the next sunny day, look up and see what comes to your mind
