Every other year the Commonwealth of Massachusetts selects people who have made outstanding contributions to the arts and humanities in Massachusetts and honors them with the Commonwealth Award.

In addition to the artist designed medal each recipient receives, the Massachusetts Cultural Council requests proposals from artists for artworks that will be commissioned as the prize for these honorees.

Judith Motzkin was the artist selected to make this art object award for the 2007 awards. Her proposal was selected from over 200 entries. The bowls she proposed are elegantly simple forms set on stone like clay slabs smoked and flame painted.

These pedestal bowls symbolize community and abundance. Some have small clay stones and objects added inside as well.
