WHEN I WAS A CHILD - by LORRAINE G HUBER

As an Artist throughout my career I have had the privelege of working with groups of children on various art projects throughout the UK. Apart form both exhilarting me and at the same time tiring me out mentally, physically and spiritually, I always am amazed and somehow humbled by the experience.
I always start from the premise that we are learning together and it never cease to amaze me how little I feel I know at the end of the experience, I always think I have learned more than the children. I just love the abandonment that children feel when expressing themselves creatively, if they are encouraged to use that freedom.
How my heart longs to paint in that way again, not thinking of the outcome, but enjoying painting purely for the joy of the paint, the colours, the feel, texture, smell and the just the fun of the process itself.
I just wish that our education system would encourage our young children to express their creativity more and not fear it and stifle it by meeting so many exam criteria. Some of the most talented artists that I know today are self taught, they still have that raw energy of a child, I don't know what other's think, but I for one like that!
